Borrow Assistive Technology Before You Buy

Every US state and territory runs a federally funded assistive technology program under the Assistive Technology Act. Most offer short-term device loans — typically two to six weeks, free or low-cost — and hands-on device demonstrations, so you can try equipment before buying it or pursuing funding. Loan terms, eligibility, and shipping vary by state; confirm details with your program.

Common questions

What are these programs?

State AT Act programs are funded under the federal Assistive Technology Act of 1998, and every state and territory has one. They are independent public services — not affiliated with WhatCanHelp — and exist so people can try assistive technology before committing to it.

What does borrowing cost?

Device loans are typically free or low-cost. Some programs cover shipping both ways; others ask borrowers to cover return shipping. Confirm with your program before borrowing.

Who can borrow?

It varies by state. Individuals and families, professionals evaluating equipment for a client, and schools are commonly eligible. Most programs require state residency.

What if a device isn't available to borrow?

Programs also offer device demonstrations, reuse and exchange programs for refurbished equipment, and help finding funding options.

What about paying for a device after the trial?

Our state-by-state funding directory maps the official programs that can help pay for assistive technology — Medicaid, Vocational Rehabilitation, AT Act financing loans, and ABLE accounts — with questions to ask each one.
