BTE

Hearing

Also known as: behind-the-ear, behind-the-ear hearing aid, behind the ear, behind-the-ear HA, BTE hearing aid

BTE stands for behind-the-ear, a hearing aid style in which the main electronics sit in a housing that rests on the back of the outer ear, connected to the ear canal by tubing or a thin wire. It is one of the most common hearing aid form factors and is available across a wide range of hearing loss severities, including severe to profound loss where more power is needed than smaller in-ear styles can deliver. BTEs are often recommended for children because the external housing is easy to adjust and replace as the child grows.
