SOS

Also known as: emergency SOS, personal emergency alert, distress signal, SOS signal

SOS is an internationally recognized emergency distress signal, now built into many assistive and wearable devices as an alert feature that lets a user quickly summon help — often by pressing a button or triggering automatic fall detection — sending an alert to emergency contacts or emergency services. In AT contexts it appears in personal emergency response systems (PERS), smartwatches, and accessible doorbells repurposed as pager buttons. For people with physical disabilities, chronic conditions, or seniors living independently, a reliable SOS function can be the difference between getting timely help and a dangerous delay.
