CVI

Conditions

Also known as: Cerebral Visual Impairment, Cortical Visual Impairment

CVI stands for Cerebral Visual Impairment (sometimes called Cortical Visual Impairment), a brain-based visual condition that is the leading cause of visual impairment in children in developed countries. Unlike eye-based vision loss, CVI results from damage or disruption to the visual processing areas of the brain, so the eyes themselves may appear structurally normal. Children with CVI often respond differently to color, movement, complexity, and lighting, which directly shapes how AT tools — such as light boxes, high-contrast materials, and adapted displays — are selected and used.
