TTY
Hardware & devices
Also known as: teletypewriter, TDD, Telecommunications Device for the Deaf, text telephone, TTD
TTY stands for teletypewriter, a device that lets people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech disabilities send and receive typed text over a standard phone line in real time. Both parties need a TTY — or one party can use a relay service — for the call to work. TTYs were the primary telephone access tool for the deaf community for decades and are still used, particularly in settings where internet-based alternatives aren't available.
