OCR
Technology
Also known as: optical character recognition
OCR stands for optical character recognition, a technology that converts printed or handwritten text captured by a camera or scanner into digital text a computer can process. In AT, it is most commonly used by people with low vision, blindness, or reading disabilities — allowing a device to photograph a document, label, or sign and then read it aloud through text-to-speech. It is built into many desktop video magnifiers, smartphone apps, and standalone reading devices, and it is a key feature to look for when magnification alone is not enough.
